Memphis Depay has told Jose Mourinho that he wants to leave United, but the latter has ruled out any loan moves.
According to the Sun, Memphis Depay has had enough during his ill-fated spell at Manchester United and has told Jose Mourinho he would like to leave the club. Depay has managed only 79 minutes in the Premier League and Europa League combined this season, having made 7 substitute appearances in total.
The Dutchman has been repeatedly been linked with a move to Everton over the past month along with teammate Morgan Schneiderlin, with Ronald Koeman even confirming that he was interested in bringing his fellow countryman to Everton. It was even reported that United were willing to sell the midfielder for as little as £12million.
Depay’s latest off-field antics have further cast his Manchester United future in doubt. However, Mourinho has said that he will not loan out Depay under any circumstances although he has not ruled out an outright sale.
“Sam Johnstone is the only player that I will allow to go on loan because he doesn’t play one single minute, he needs to play,” Mourinho said, according to the Telegraph. “It’s time for Sam to play six months. That’s the only loan move that we are going to do.”
Mourinho also said that a big part of the reason behind him scarcely playing Depay was the fact that it was his feeling that Depay would always be leaving in January.
“When I have information that the player probably has a big chance to leave, then I have to care more about the others. My decisions in relation to Memphis were influenced by the feeling that he would like to leave in January and that we were going to have a real offer that we would be willing to accept.”
“But if you arrive in January and nothing happens – and we have lots of matches – then if he is going to be my player until the end of the season I will help him and he will be useful for us,” he said, according to ESPN.
Depay joined United last season in a £25m deal from Dutch side PSV, with Louis van Gaal admitting that he was “forced” to sign him after strong interest from Paris Saint-Germain. Many expected Depay to hit the ground running given his performances in the Netherlands, but things have not gone to plan for the 23-year old.
Still, considering his talent, there is no doubt that Depay will have many suitors once the transfer window opens with Mourinho hinting at a permanent deal for any of his other fringe players. Depay has also been linked with Roma, who are apparently keen on bringing the Dutchman to the Serie A, and could make a bid.
Given the reports that Manchester United are willing to accept a reduced price for Depay, there should be no shortage of suitors for a player who van Gaal once described as “the best talent of his age.”
