Real Madrid Castilla starlet Martin Odegaard is close to moving on loan next month to the Netherlands

According to a report in Spanish Publication MARCA, the 18-year-old is close to moving to Dutch side Heerenveen on loan. The report states that he was in the Netherlands, finalising the remaining details of the deal and it is set to be made official in the coming days.

The report further states that Odegaard and Real Madrid agree that a temporary move to the Eredivisie would be the best way for him to further his development and the Abe Lenstra Stadion is seen as the ideal place to do it, given that they are fighting for a European spot next season.

Odegaard has never been able to make the kind of impact expected of him after his big move early last year. Despite training with the first team, he was never able to break into it and has been featuring for Real’s Castilla side on a regular basis.

He has been expected to go on loan for quite a while and Ligue 1 side Rennes were in pole position to sign him. However, they later backed out of the deal upon the insistence of manager Christian Gourcuff who believed that the youngster wasn’t ready yet.

While his talent is undoubted and he has the potential to be a future superstar. He has transcended the youth levels, but his development could be fast tracked if he faced stronger, quicker and more tactically astute opposition on a regular basis as a part of a senior first XI side.

He can be forgiven for not featuring more often in the Real Madrid squad or even the bench for that matter, given that the kind quality he has to compete against at only 18 years of age. Should he be nurtured well and monitored properly, there is no doubt that he could one day return to feature on Zinedine Zidane’s team sheet on a regular basis.
