Arsenal have not opened talks over a new contract with Jack Wilshere yet, according to reports.
Wilshere’s future at Arsenal has already been cast in doubts after the midfielder was loaned out to Bournemouth for the entire season in the summer. The signings of Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka were a sign that Arsene Wenger was hesitant to rely on the injury-prone Wilshere and the Englishman recognised this, leaving on loan in order to get regular first-team football.
Arsene Wenger has said earlier that he wants to offer Wilshere a new contract but the midfielder himself has admitted in the past that he is unsure what the future holds for him. Wilshere has also been linked with moves to several other clubs, including struggling Italian giants AC Milan.
Despite Arsene Wenger’s insistence that Wilshere has a future at Arsenal, the Daily Mail report that he is yet to be offered a new contract. Wilshere currently has 18 months left on his contract and Arsenal could be forced to sell him at a much lower price than they would desire, but they are yet to contact his representatives over an extension.
Talks with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have been ongoing for months, even though their deals have the same amount of time to run as Wilshere’s. Olivier Giroud and Francis Coquelin are also in advanced talks over new contracts, with both expected to agree fresh terms.
They report that Wilshere is worried about his future at Arsenal as he has been with the club since he was a child. But, he recognises that he needs first team football and is willing to leave should it come to that. It is very likely that Arsenal will sell him at the end of the season should his contract not be extended.
However, with Santi Cazorla’s career winding down and his constant injury problems, there may be a chance that Wilshere is seen as a suitable successor for his role. Despite picking up just 1 assist for Bournemouth in 13 Premier League appearances, Wilshere has been earning praise for his performances in the centre of the park this season.
The 24-year old has been central to Bournemouth’s attacking play, often initiating quick counters with his bursts forwards. Their passing moves always go through Wilshere and his teammates have been saying how much of a difference he has made in both training and on the pitch.
Wilshere is also seen as a leader and Wenger has said in the past that he can picture Wilshere captaining both Arsenal and England at some stage. If Wilshere manages to stay injury free for the entire season, Arsenal may decide to stick with him and extend his contract.
