Julian Draxler has been omitted from Wolfsburg’s squad for the away game against Bayern Munich on Sunday, with reports stating that he is unlikely to play for the club again
Julian Draxler has been enduring a tough time at Wolfsburg after his comments in the summer. Draxler openly stated his intention to leave Wolfsburg in the summer, saying he had an agreement with Wolfsburg that he would be allowed to leave after the Euros. However, Wolfsburg swiftly denied this claim, stating that they would not sell Draxler under any circumstances.
Draxler alienated the Wolfsburg faithfuls with those comments, and he was booed by Wolfsburg fans during their last Bundesliga fixture, a 3-2 loss to Hertha Berlin. Speaking after the game, Draxler once again reiterated that he wanted to leave Wolfsburg, and it appears that his comments, along with his alleged lack of focus have not gone down well with the Wolfsburg hierarchy.
According to a report in Bild, manager Valerien Ismael has lost patience with the midfielder’s negative attitude and has decided that he no longer requires Draxler’s services. They report that the team left on their shuttle for Braunschweig Airport at 16:15, but Draxler left the training ground separately at 16:29.
They further state that Wolfsburg can get a fixed fee of £63 million euros in the summer, but the Daily Mail claim that Wolfsburg have decided to cut their losses and have placed a £30million price-tag on Draxler for anyone who wants him in January.
Draxler was linked with a number of top European clubs throughout the summer, and a lot of them will be keeping a keen eye on the situation. Arsenal, Manchester United, Juventus and Bayern Munich have all been linked with the youngster at various times, and he has been linked with Arsenal for a couple of years now, with Arsene Wenger said to be a big admirer of the German international.
His behaviour might put off potential suitors, however.
Carlo Ancelotti – speaking ahead of the match against Wolfsburg – was full of praise for the German, but clarified that he would not be attempting to sign him in January :
“Draxler is a very interesting player. Full stop. He can play in any team. Our team is complete. We won’t do anything in winter — there’s no market for us.” he said, according to the Daily Mail
In hindsight, allowing Draxler to leave in the summer when he spoke out about a transfer would probaby have been the best option as the whole situation with has been a big distraction for the side. However, it does appear that Wolfsburg are now quickly trying to move on and it looks increasingly likely that Draxler will be sold in January.
