Brazilian club Santos’ coach reveals that he has told the club’s board to sign a famous European player and that Bastian Schweinsteiger fit the ‘profile’

Bastian Schweinsteiger’s Manchester United nightmare has been well documented this season. Since the arrival of Jose Mourinho this summer, he has not seen any game time at all and was even exiled from first team training during pre-season.

He use to train with the reserves until last month, when he was recalled to train with the first team once again. It has been nearly 5 months of this treatment and one wonders how much more of it the former Bayern Munich midfielder can take. There have been no shortage of suitors, and now South American giants  Santos have joined the list.

According to UOL Esporte, Santos’ coach, Dorival Junior has said in an interview that the German legend “fits the profile” of the kind of player that Santos need. Dorival said that it was an idea of his which he ran by the Santos board, where they ought to try and bring in famous players from Europe who weren’t being utilised by their clubs, and Schweinsteiger fit the bill.

Apart from being a supremely talented player, the 32-year-old would bring a vast amount of experience to the squad, having played for Bayern Munich and Germany and for most of his career. A player of his stature, who is an established football legend would also help raise Santos’ profile in the eyes of football fans around the globe and possibly help bring the world’s attention to the Serie A club.

Galatasaray, Besiktas, Juventus and most recently MLS club Chicago Fire have all been linked with a move for the World Cup winner over the course of this ordeal and it likely that more suitors will join that list before January. At 32 years of age he still has the ability to play in Europe’s top leagues for a few more years.

However, a move away from Manchester United seems like the only way forward if he is wishes to ever play again. He has a contract which runs till the summer of 2018 and with the likes of Daley Blind, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Michael Carrick, Paul Pogba all ahead of him in the pecking order, he should move to another club while he still has options available.
