Sunderland have reportedly joined Liverpool and Tottenham in the race to sign FC Porto striker Moussa Marega.

Portuguese publication A Bola have claimed that Sunderland are showing interest in FC Porto striker Moussa Marega. The Black Cats are reportedly looking to add to the striking department to ease the burden from the shoulders of English veteran Jermaine Defoe.

Moussa Marega is a Mali international who is on the books of FC Porto. The 25-year-old is currently on loan at fellow Liga NOS outfit Vitoria De Guimaraes and has been in sublime form with a return of 10 goals and 1 assist from just 9 league appearances, all of which he has started.

And, as previously reported, his form had already started attracting the interest of the Premier League duo of Liverpool and Tottenham. Now, as per the report from A Bola, Sunderland have already joined the duo as potential suitors for the player.

Sunderland have struggled to find the back of the net this season with David Moyes’ side currently sitting bottom both in terms of points and in goals scored so far. The Black Cats have only managed 9 goals from 11 matches, which is less than 1 goal a game and goals are an absolute necessity if they are to rise above the relegation places.

And, while, in the last match, Anichebe has proven to be an able partner to Defoe, Marega could prove to be a better option. But, the Black Cats will face some stiff competition for the player with the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham also interested in Marega, who can play both on the right wing and in a more central position.

While Tottenham could be looking to beef up their options, Liverpool are looking for a like-for-like replacement for Sadio Mane, who will be unavailable in the new year owing to his duties at the African Cup of Nations.

Moussa Marega is contracted to FC Porto up until 2020 and the Portuguese outfit are likely to ask for a hefty amount in order to part with the player, which should not be a problem to any of the interested parties, given the riches of the Premier League.

It will be interesting to see if Marega chooses to become a squad player at a top club like Liverpool or Tottenham or takes the risk to join a side at the bottom, Sunderland, with the luxury of being a key player in the squad.
