Liverpool’s chances for the young German midfielder could be scuppered thanks to a former player

Liverpool’s interest in 20-year-old midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud has been widely reported, with manager Jurgen Klopp said to be a huge admirer of the Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder. Recently, the English media suggested that Liverpool boss had made the German his top priority and the club were preparing for a £26 million bid to acquire the player.

The Reds were already facing competition from the likes of Juventus for Mahmoud Dahoud, but now even Borussia Dortmund seem to have joined the race, claims German tabloid Bild (h/t Liverpool Echo).

The newspaper states BVB boss Thomas Tuchel sees Dahoud as the ideal long-term replacement of Ilkay Gundogan, and as such, the club are willing to offer a combination of €15 million transfer fee for the 21-year-old midfielder along with former Liverpool midfielder Nuri Sahin going the other way.

Nuri Sahin has been an outcast under the reign of Thomas Tuchel, failing to play even a single league minute this season, but an offer consisting of a fee plus the Turkish international is said to be tempting Borussia Monchengladbach.

Mahmoud Dahoud has a stipulation in his current contract due to which the highly-rated midfielder could be available for as little as £8.5 million at the end of 2016/17. BVB know Dahoud’s low release-clause is sure to attract a huge tug-of-war among the European elites in the summer and hence are planning to table the aforementioned bid in the upcoming January transfer window itself.

It is said Monchengladbach have opened talks with Mahmoud Dahoud for a contract renewal, but the negotiations between the two parties have been far from successful thus far. With Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool so close on the heels, it does look there maybe some new development in the midfielder’s future in January if his contract situation doesn’t change.
