Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has called for the board to be patient with new manager Jose Mourinho.

TV journalist and former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has told the club to be patient with new boss Jose Mourinho. David Moyes and Louis van Gaal were the two managers to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson, but failed to win the league with the Red Devils, and Mourinho is already under the cosh after moving to Old Trafford in the summer.

Speaking at the Manchester Evening News Business of the Year Awards 2016 at the Midland Hotel, Neville said (via ESPN): “It’s going to take some time for United to get through this thing of sacking managers if they don’t come in fourth.

“They have to really live with Mourinho now and hopefully it will work and he can get it right because we need some stability there.

“I thought United would settle down quicker than they have with the new signings. They haven’t. It looks like it’s still going to be a bit painful.

“Mourinho has always been about picking his best XI and he will deliver the win. He has had to change it constantly and he doesn’t know his best team yet.”

Despite getting all of the four players he wanted in the summer, Mourinho’s side has failed to show consistency in their performances. Home draws against Stoke City and Burnley were certainly unacceptable, and being decimated 4-0 by his former employers Chelsea was definitely not what the Portuguese signed up for.

Next week Mourinho will face off against his arch nemesis; the one who he once referred to as a ‘specialist in failure’- Arsene Wenger. Unlike most skirmishes between the two, this will be one of the fewer times that the odds are heavily stacked against Mourinho.

Failure to pick up maximum points from this one could see United drift further away from the pack and thus put their title challenge into further jeopardy. The Red Devils are on the back of a 3-1 win against Swansea and will hope to take that winning mentality into the game against the Gunners.
