Barcelona’s Luis Suarez looks set to sign a new contract, amidst interest from Manchester United, with the Uruguayan forward claiming that talks with the club regarding his future are progressing ‘nicely’.

There has been a lot of speculation linking Manchester United with a big money move for ex-Liverpool striker Luis Suarez. However, in an attempt to clear the air on his future at Barcelona, the striker has come out and indicated a potential contract renewal with the Catalan giants. Suarez, who is on international duty with Uruguay preparing for their World Cup Qualifier against Ecuador, said in the pre-match press conference, “Negotiations are moving along nicely in the right direction. Both parties want this deal to go through.”

The 29-year-old signed for the Blaugrana in 2014 after enjoying a stellar season with Liverpool in the Premier League and has since then stamped his class and authority at the Camp Nou as well. Suarez took home the European Golden Shoe this year following his league tally of 40 goals in a memorable 2015-16 campaign. The Uruguayan scored an astonishing 59 goals in all competitions last year in a performance that had the big guns interested in shelling out astronomical sums of money on the forward.

Suarez, however, has set the record straight and stated that he intends to finish his career at the Camp Nou. But that hasn’t stopped the likes of Manchester United expressing their interest in the forward in recent weeks. The Old Trafford club aren’t exactly in good terms with the player since the racism incident involving him and then United defender Patrice Evra. And also, there is the small matter of him being a former Liverpool player. But desperate times call for desperate measures and with the club keen to chart it’s growth back to the peak of English football, they are willing to do what it takes to achieve that.

Stars secure their futures with the big clubs

In recent weeks, a number of stars from Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have signed contract extensions tying down their futures to the club up to the next decade. The Catalans completed negotiations with Suarez’s strike partner Neymar, and he signed a new five-year contract in late October that will keep him at Barcelona until 2021. The contract includes a buy-out clause fixed at around £167m for the first year of his new contract, £185m for the second and £210m for the remaining three years.

Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo have pledged their future to the Los Blancos with contracts that further exemplified their status as the highest paid players in the world. A deal for Lionel Messi is also in the pipeline with the Blaugrana admitting that an announcement regarding the Argentine’s future will be made in the months to come. And with Luis Suarez also potentially staying put at the Camp Nou, the La Liga’s star quotient looks set to remain for many more years to come.
