Arsenal and Liverpool are reportedly both monitoring Rennes forward Paul-Georges Ntep, who has less than a year left on his current contract
The Sun have claimed that Arsenal and Liverpool are showing interest in Rennes forward Paul-Georges Ntep. The 24-year-old French international has been drawing interest from the Premier League duo, who are running the rule over the forward with a view to signing the player come January.
Paul-Georges Ntep is a French player who joined Rennes more than a couple of seasons ago and has grown into a great player with two senior international caps to his name. The player, who can be deployed both as a central striker as well as on either wing, has scored 16 goals and recorded 11 assists in 72 appearances thus far for Rennes.
The 24-year-old’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the current season and as per the report, the player is refusing to sign a contract extension at the club. In the wake of the possibility of losing him eventually, the club are now reportedly resigned to selling him in January in an attempt to recoup the investment made in the Cameroonian-born player.
While Arsenal seem to have enough options up-front, Liverpool would love to add options to the front-line with almost all of their goals coming from the wings or the midfielders.
Arsenal and Liverpool, though, face competition from the likes of Southampton and Lyon. Saints boss Claude Puel is thought be on the market for a replacement for new signing Sofiane Boufal, who will be sidelined due to his international duties in the event that he is called up by Morocco for the African Cup of Nations, which is more likely to happen than not.
The capture of Ntep in January would be of immediate help to Puel but Ligue 1 outfit Lyon are also considering the possibility of approaching the player with the aim of keeping him in France. Ntep’s skills is likely to be on display as his club goes up against Nantes on Saturday and the representatives of the quartet, if present, would have their eyes glued on the 24-year-old.
Ntep looks set to leave the club, be it in January or at the end of the season, and Rennes would look to offload the player as soon as possible with a number of top clubs interested in his signature.
