Official: Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric commits his future to the club

The former Spurs man has put pen to paper to extend his existing contract with the Los Blancos

Real Madrid have officially announced an agreement has been reached for a contract extension with Croatian midfielder Luka Modric. The statement published on their website on the event of the extension states that the new deal extends Modric’s existing contract by two years. By the time his contract at Real Madrid ends in 2020, the midfielder will be 34, having previously expressed his desire to finish his career at the club.

The midfielder, who is currently nursing a knee injury that will keep him sidelined till early November, will appear before the media on Wednesday at 1:30pm in the press room at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, states the club’s website.

Luka Modric, after a slow start with the club when he was first signed from Spurs in August 2012, has gone on to become one of the club’s most influential players, with manager Zinedine Zidane claiming the Croatian is a ‘master of the game’ and the crucial connector between the attack and defence for the team.

Previously, former manager Carlo Ancelotti, under whom the club won the coveted La Decima, had echoed similar sentiments, stating the team doesn’t function the same when Modric doesn’t feature in it.

Luka Modric has appeared 180 times for the Los Blancos till now, scoring 11 goals while setting up a team-mate with a pass for further 27. In the process, the midfielder has helped the team on their way to UEFA Super-Cup twice (2014, 2016), FIFA World Club Championship & Copa del Rey once and the Champions League twice (2013–14, 2015–16) alongside accumulating a host of individual accolades.

The announcement comes close to the heels of fellow midfielder Toni Kroos’ extension with the club, with stories floating that negotiations for new deals for Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale are currently ongoing. Naturally, manager Zidane would be delighted to have retained or close to be retaining his most integral players.
