Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp are reportedly closely monitoring the Italian striker who has a contract with the Serie A side until 2019.
After having sold Christian Benteke in the summer to Crystal Palace, Liverpool find themselves short of pure strikers in their squad. Even though he has Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi at his disposal, Jurgen Klopp seems to have chosen Roberto Firmino to lead his side’s attack.
Daniel Sturridge has largely contributed as a substitute this season and Divock Origi, despite his great run of form towards the end of last season, is still one for the future. Meanwhile, Danny Ings is yet to return to match fitness following his long term injury.
According to TMW, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is having his staff keep a close eye on Genoa forward Leonardo Pavoletti. So far this season, the striker has scored 3 goals in 5 appearances for the Italian side in all competitions. Pavoletti had a good campaign in his full debut season with Genoa last year, scoring 15 goals and registering 3 assists in 26 appearances in all competitions, which helped them to an 11th placed finish in the Serie A.
Prior to moving to Genoa, he helped Sassuolo win the Serie B and gain promotion in 2013. In January 2015, he was widely expected to make a move to English side Leeds United on loan and even attended one of their games against Wigan Athletic.
However, the move never materialised and he moved instead to Genoa on loan, with Francesco Acerbi going the other way. After an impressive spell which saw him score 6 goals in 10 Serie A appearances, the 27-year-old was signed by Genoa for a reported €4 million transfer fee.
At 6’2″, the Italian is great in the air and is a menace in the box, harassing defenders and creating chances for teammates with his movement. However, his greatest assets are his poacher’s instinct and positional sense. Those combination of those attributes and his clinical finishing make him lethal in the box.
Pavoletti would certainly bring something different to Liverpool’s strike force and would thrive with the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Firmino creating chances for him in the box. He would also provide a much cheaper alternative to the Reds compared to anyone else in his position with a similar scoring record.
