Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez are demanding £250,000 a week to commit their futures to Arsenal, according to reports in the English media.
The German midfielder currently earns £140,000 a week at Arsenal, while his Chilean teammate earns £130,000 a week. Both of their current contracts expire in 2018, and the club hierarchy have been trying their best to tie the pair down to long-term deals.
The Times are now reporting that Ozil and Sanchez want £250,000-a-week in wages to put pen to paper. The report adds that this would make the deal £36 million more than what Arsenal had originally budgeted for as the wage demands are £70,000 more than what had originally been discussed.
Negotiations will resume after the international break and most Gooners will be hoping that the club agree to the players’ terms. This could be a portent of things to come though, as the club’s financially savvy manager Arsene Wenger is set to depart at the end of this season.
In twenty years at the helm, Wenger has led the club to numerous triumphs and has overseen their transition to a new stadium. This is not the kind of deal he would ever be bullied into, but his voice behind the scenes may not be as influential as his tenure comes to an end.
Mesut Ozil is the most expensive player signed by Arsenal, joining from Real Madrid in 2013 for a club record £42.5 million. The German midfielder has gone on to become one of the most important players for the club. Last season he provided a league-high 19 assists as the Gunners nearly clinched the Premier League trophy.
Sanchez joined Arsenal from Barcelona for £31.7 million just a year after Ozil. He had a spectacular debut season, scoring 25 goals for the Gunners. After an injury plagued season last time around, he has hit top form again in his new role as central striker. The Chilean has registered four goals and four assists already and is one of the league’s most in-form players at present.
