Tottenham Hotspur look set to beat fellow Premier League giants Liverpool in the race to secure the services of 16-year-old Fulham left-back Ryan Sessegnon.

According to James Nursery of the Mirror (h/t HITC), Tottenham are expected to complete the signing of Fulham starlet Ryan Sessegnon in January. The report states that the player could be available for as less as £5 million, but given the interest of league rivals Liverpool, his value could be inflated a little further.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has vested tremendous faith in Danny Rose and has seen him develop into an important component for the national side as well. Rose is one of the better left backs in England at the moment and is equally adept in providing assistance in both thirds of the field.

Also, the club have recently tied the player down to a new long-term deal, keeping him at White Hart Lane until 2021.

Ben Davies, who serves as a deputy for Rose at Tottenham, has emerged as a transfer target for league giants Chelsea. Cesar Azpilicueta has been deployed as a makeshift left-back for the last two seasons at the Bridge and new signing Marcus Alonso may not be ready yet to challenge the Serbian for a regular starting berth.

Thus, the departure of Davies could see Pochettino welcome Sessegnon at White Hart Lane. Still only 16, the young English defender has at least a decade and a half of good football to look forward to.

Also, he would not only give the Spurs boss a good backup option but would also give him a promising left-back for the future. Rose does not come with a clean bill of health and his erratic form could see Sessegnon become a first choice sooner than he expected at White Hart Lane.

Manchester City have also been keen on the player in the past, so it make a take something spectacular from Mauricio Pochettino if he is to lure the player to White Hart Lane in January.
