Liverpool are reportedly interested in a deal for Sassuolo’s in-form forward Gregoire Defrel and have sent their scouts to monitor the forward’s progress in the Serie A.

The Sun have claimed that Liverpool are keen on a deal to bring Sassuolo forward Gregoire Defrel to Anfield in the near future. Jurgen Klopp is reportedly keeping tabs on the 25-year-old and has sent representatives to monitor Defrel, with the aim of turning mere interest into a formal offer soon.

Gregoire Defrel has always had pace and dribbling ability in his repertoire, as well as a more-than-decent left foot. However, the 25-year-old could never really get going as a forward, with his inability to add goals to his performances a notable weakness.

Defrel seems to have worked hard on improving his finishing and the efforts are beginning to show. The 25-year-old has been prolific thus far this season, scoring five goals in six games.

The forward’s current season tally is just two shy of the seven goals he managed in the whole of last season and 2016/17 could well be a breakout season for the Frenchman.

Jurgen Klopp has already bid adieu to two forwards this summer — Christian Benteke and Mario Balotelli have failed to impress the German manager and have subsequently been moved on to Crystal Palace and Nice respectively. The former Borussia Dortmund manager is currently left with the trio of Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings and Divock Origi for the forward positions.

While Sturridge’s career has been marred by injuries throughout, Danny Ings has failed to establish himself at Anfield. Meanwhile, Divock Origi is still considered to be a work in progress. With this in mind, Klopp is reportedly eyeing a move for Defrel in order to beef up his striking options while also providing some stiff competition to Daniel Sturridge.

The 25-year-old could be available for a reasonable transfer fee, but it is unclear whether Sassuolo would be interested to listen to offers for the player given they are competing on both the domestic and European front.

A deal looks far from being done at this stage, but given that Liverpool are sending a scout to monitor the player’s progress, Jurgen Klopp’s interest in the French attacker appears to be concrete.
