Injury concerns persist with two of the best footballers in the world. While Messi is suffering from a groin injury, Ronaldo has not featured at all for Real Madrid this season due to a knee injury.
Messi’s injury means that it is uncertain whether he will be playing against Alaves over the weekend. Barcelona have confirmed that Lionel Messi’s groin injury has persisted, but set no timetable for his return to action.
The Argentine captain, who scored his team’s only goal in the 1-0 victory over Uruguay, admitted that the injury had been bothering him for a week.
The superstar himself took to Facebook where he addressed his fans saying, “Everything is fine, I have to slow things down as I recover with physio, but it’s nothing to worry about. Thanks to you all for your support.”
Now, ‘slowing down’ might mean he will have to skip a few matches, so it might be some time before we see him in action again.
Barcelona have given no ‘timetable’ regarding Messi’s return and he missed Argentina’s 2-2 draw with Venezuela mid week.
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo’s knee injury has been more persistent and he has not featured for Madrid this season. However, he is rigorously training himself to regain fitness and has reportedly recovered. The Portuguese captain has been posting pictures of him training and is regularly banging goals during the training sessions.
However, it remains to be seen whether he will play in the weekend’s clash against Sporting CP. Madrid, though, might not want to risk him just yet and rest him for another week.
The Portuguese ace is still working his way back from injury after limping off in the Euro 2016 final win over France.
He could be back in action after the international break, with Real posting an encouraging video of their key man working on his fitness in the gym. Ronaldo can be seen doing plenty of ab work including full-body crunches, ankle taps and twisted sit-ups.
And the man himself uploaded a photo on Instagram showing him straddling an exercise bike while wearing a pair of jeans.
