German Olympic coach Horst Hrubesch has criticised the lack of faith shown by Arsenal in young forward Serge Gnabry, who has been in excellent form in Rio.
Germany U23 coach Horst Hrubesch spoke to German publication Sport1 after his team’s 3-3 draw against South Korea, where he highlighted the form of Serge Gnabry and expressed his disappointment regarding the youngster’s lack of opportunities at Arsenal.
“He [Gnabry] has shown what he is capable of. I’m just frustrated that he’s never shown this faith by his club [Arsenal],” Hrubesch told Sport1.
The Gunners youngster has been on fire at the Rio Olympics and has been responsible for three of Germany’s five goals in their two matches. The winger scored a last minute free-kick to salvage a 3-3 draw against Korea Republic in their second match and has, thus far, been single-handedly keeping the Germans in with a chance to make it to the quarter-finals of the Olympics.
The 21-year-old has received praise from his coach along with many of his international teammates. Goalkeeper Timo Horn and defender Matthias Ginter were both full of praise for Gnabry after his stand-out performances in Rio.
Arsenal teammate and fellow German international Mesut Ozil also congratulated Gnabry through on Instagram.
Serge Gnabry broke into the senior side at Arsenal at the end of 2013, but has since not received many minutes on the pitch for the first team. The 21-year-old’s last Arsenal appearance was in March 2014. The German forward admitted that he had a couple of torrid seasons at the Emirates but said he hoped to put it behind him and focus on the future ahead with Arsenal.
Arsene Wenger is known to give promising youngsters regular opportunities in the first team, but even though the Frenchman has acknowledged Gnabry’s tremendous talent and potential, he has not received much backing from the manager in terms of game time. Gnabry told Sport1 he was hopeful of a breakthrough at Arsenal this season and his performances for Germany at Rio show that he is determined and ready to make his mark in the footballing world.
