Liverpool star Emre Can ready to prove he’s a leader at Anfield

Liverpool’s German star Emre Can has reportedly said he is ready to lead the Reds’ midfield.

Emre Can has revealed he feels he can be Liverpool’s new leader in the midfield after a strong season under fellow countryman Jurgen Klopp. The German youngster, who is of Turkish origin, was deployed majorly in the midfield role by the German manager. Before Klopp, most of his game time during his Bayer Leverkusen days and under Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool was as a defender.

“I can say I am a leader but you have to show it. Of course we have other leaders like Hendo or Milner. We all want to do it. I am like that. I want to be the one pushing the team on of course. As I said I want to show that to everyone. I have played plenty of games, I have played in the semi of the Euros and I am confident enough to say I want to go for it, I want to push the team on,” the German told Liverpool Echo.

Emre Can has been tipped by many to be the long-term replacement for legend Steven Gerrard. While the German appreciated the comparison, he was humble, admitting that he has a long way to go before emulating the Liverpool legend.

“That’s of course a big, big honour. I have a lot of respect for him but I am far off that level he played for Liverpool. I have to go my own way, be Emre Can. I met him in Los Angeles, we have stayed in touch.”

Emre Can also said that he aims to win trophies this season, as should be the case for a club like Liverpool.

“If you play for Liverpool the target always has to be winning titles and it will be the same next season.”

The German international has been tipped for big things, and might just be the future leader Klopp can rely on to drive the team on to bigger and better results. Liverpool are preparing to re-establish themselves among the elite of the Premier League.
