Adnan Januzaj has been deemed surplus to Jose Mourinho’s plans at Manchester United, while the jury is still out on Marouane Fellaini. Their former manager David Moyes has recently admitted that he wants to bring the Belgian pair from the Theater of Dreams to the Stadium of Light.
The Scotsman has recently been appointed as the manager of Sunderland, following Sam Allardyce’s decision to take up the England managerial role. He wasted no time in expressing his interest in two of his former players during his ill-fated season as Manchester United manager.
“If anyone of those players want to join us, I would be happy to have them because they are excellent players,” Moyes said on Monday at his presentation as Sunderland’s manager, according to SkySports.
“We’re interested but I’m sure there’s a load of other clubs that are as well. We’re interested in lots of good players. You have to have a realistic view. There’ll be some players we can attract just now and some players we can’t.
“We’ll try and get the ones we can and the ones who want to come here and start on the new journey we’re on. We have offers in for people already and we’re working hard.”
Marouane Fellaini is truly a David Moyes kind of player. The 28-year-old midfielder was a key player in the Scotsman’s Everton team for five years before following him to Old Trafford in a £27.5 million deal in 2013. He has failed to create much impact with the Red Devils though, as he has become a maligned figure at Old Trafford because of his mercurial performances.
Fellaini looks set to remain at Old Trafford though because Jose Mourinho thinks his physical presence and aggression is enough to warrant a place in his squad.
A much more plausible option for Moyes and Sunderland is 21-year-old Adnan Januzaj. The Scotsman was the one who handed Januzaj his professional debut in 2013; the Belgian then went on to make 35 appearances for Man United in all competitions that season. Moyes’ successor Louis van Gaal used him sparingly the next season and after a terrible spell on loan with Borussia Dortmund this past season, it looks like his time at Old Trafford is up.
Januzaj was left out of the Red Devils squad for their pre-season match against Galatasaray despite being fit. This might be a strong indicator that Mourinho does not count him in his plans this season and could be open to selling him.
