Tottenham are reportedly interested in Mainz’s attacking midfielder Yunus Malli.
Daily Mirror have reported that Tottenham are eyeing a move for Turkish midfielder Yunus Malli. The report says that the attacking midfielder has been linked with Tottenham on earlier occasions and the Spurs hierarchy have decided to reignite their interest in the 24-year-old.
The midfielder has been steadily rising through the ranks of Bundesliga over the past few years with Mainz and had a breakthrough season last term scoring 11 goals for the club in the league. The 24-year-old was rightly awarded a place in the Turkish national squad for the recently concluded European Championships after his stellar performances in the Bundesliga.
Yunus Malli fueled speculation about his Mainz future after his comments in a recent interview with German publication Kicker.
“I can’t and won’t rule anything out. What’s the point of saying ‘I play for Mainz this season’ and things look different in two weeks?” said the midfielder.
It is reported that the midfielder has a £7.5m release clause in his contract but that the clause is set to expire on July 31, 2016 and it is likely that any possible move after the expiration of the clause would command a much higher fee. Tottenham are not the only club after Malli though, as it looks like the Londoners have competition in Super Lig giants Fenerbahce. Turkish newspaper Fotospor have claimed that Fenerbahce are also looking to activate the midfielder’s release clause.
The midfielder must now consider between Spurs and Fenerbahce. The Londoners have enjoyed their most successful season last year and seem to be on an upward trend in terms of reputation and potential. Spurs would also be able to provide Malli the prospect of playing in the Champions League. A move to Fenerbahce, on the other hand, would bring the attacking midfielder close to his home but the Turkish side are currently in the third qualification phase for Champions League. They face a tough fixture against Monaco and still have a long way to go before securing a place in the group stages of the Champions League.
Tottenham would have to hurry though, if they want the player in £7.5m as the reported release clause is due to expire at the end of the month. Malli earlier said he was not sure about his Mainz future and as to what could unfold over the next two weeks. If Spurs are serious about bringing the Turkish ace to England, a move could very well materialise within the coming days.
