Reports had already started leaking in that Louis van Gaal was to be sacked by the Manchester United hierarchy after the FA Cup triumph on Saturday, but after a prolonged period of suspense on Monday, the club have finally released an official statement on the matter.
The Spanish media had originally broken the story of the sacking of Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, even as the Dutchman and the team were celebrating their FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace. Soon the British media had confirmed the story and it looked like an almost certainty, barring the fact that for 48 hours there would be no official communication from the club on the matter.
However Manchester United made it official late on Monday evening as they confirmed the rumours.
“I would like to thank Louis and his staff for their excellent work in the past two years culminating in winning a record-equaling 12th FA Cup for the club (and securing him a title in four different countries),” said executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, with the official club website stating that, “Louis van Gaal is to leave Manchester United, with immediate effect.”
“He has behaved with great professionalism and dignity throughout his time here. He leaves us with a legacy of having given several young players the confidence to show their ability on the highest stage. Everyone at the club wishes him all the best in the future.”
The Monday that didn’t seem to end
With Manchester United fans across the world already in the know about Louis van Gaal’s future, the Dutchman arrived at the club’s Carrington training ground with the glaring eye of the world’s media placed squarely on him. However his ‘friends in the media’ were made to wait around twiddling their thumbs as no official word from the club seemed forthcoming.
Numerous sources had confirmed that Louis van Gaal would be sacked on Monday, and the world stood perplexed as to why the club hadn’t made an announcement with their Twitter feed and website staying completely silent. The comparisons to the announcement and Van Gaal’s slow style of play came fast and furious as Twitter already said it’s goodbyes.
The confirmation finally came late in the evening though, as the sacking was made official. After two full seasons in charge, the Iron Tulip is no longer the manager of Manchester United.
