Manchester United’s FA Cup victory may have been Louis van Gaal’s last outing as the club manager, with Jose Mourinho set to be announced as his successor this week.

Ever since Jose Mourinho was relieved of his duties at Chelsea, the whispers associating him to Manchester United only seemed to grow louder. Louis van Gaal almost pulled off a grand escape into the Champions League next season, but his failure to do so has meant that their emphatic FA Cup final triumph could well be his last outing as Manchester United manager.

Media outlets in Spain had been reporting that the Portuguese manager was set to be announced as manager very soon, and now the BBC assert that Mourinho is set to be named the new manager of Manchester United this week.

The Old Trafford hierarchy have decided to part ways with Louis van Gaal because of his failure to secure a Champions League spot and challenge for the Premier League title this season, with the criticism of his style of play surely playing a part as well.

Ecstacy and agony for the Iron Tulip

Manchester United finally had something to celebrate this season as they defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 to lift the FA Cup Trophy on Saturday. The Red Devils rallied after having gone behind in the 78th minute, with Juan Mata scoring an equalizer just three minutes later. There was more drama to come at extra-time, with Chris Smalling being sent off before Jesse Lingard scored the winning goal in spectacular fashion.

This was the club’s first FA Cup triumph since 2004 and their first major silverware since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. However, it will not be enough to save the career of the manager who guided them to it.

Louis van Gaal has led Man United through a very forgettable season, featuring little action and a style of play that has drawn detractors from fans to pundits. The FA Cup is the only silver lining in an otherwise terrible campaign, and the Manchester United board have decided that they want better.
