The French forward has emerged as one of the most potent goal scoring threats in both La Liga and the Champions League, and this has not gone unnoticed by the big teams across Europe. However, he has recently reaffirmed his commitment to Atletico Madrid, confirming contract talks are underway.
Antoine Griezmann is currently one of the top strikers in Europe. The 25 year old Frenchman has scored a whopping 32 goals in 53 appearances for Atletico Madrid in all competitions. Although he has a solid contract till 2020, a number of top European clubs were hoping they could lure him away from the Vicente Calderon in the summer transfer window.
Griezmann has however made his stance on the situation very clear, claiming that he would stay at Atletico even if national hero Zinedine Zidane personally called him about a possible move away.
“I feel good at Atletico,” Griezmann told French TV Channel Canal+.
“First of all he’d have to call. Then I’d respond because he’s a great player and a great person all the same.
“But I feel good at Atletico. I’m in the process of seeing about renewing my contract and we’re on the right track. So I hope we can finish it.”
Big teams will have to break the bank to sign Antoine
The French forward’s current contract at Atletico Madrid extends till the summer of 2020, and also reportedly includes a release clause of 80 million euros. His representatives and the club are now negotiating a deal which could prolong his stay at Atletico, increase his wages substantially, and also include an increased release clause of 100 million euros.
That amount is equal to the highest transfer fee ever paid by a football club for a player, the price commanded by Gareth Bale when he moved to Real Madrid in 2013.
However, clubs these days are not deterred by high prices and big money signings have become commonplace. Should Griezmann continue to impress, then the big clubs could be willing to break the bank in an effort to sign the Frenchman.
