The Real Madrid captain was a top transfer target for Manchester United last summer and the defender was actively pursued by the Premier League giants before he penned a new deal with Los Blancos.
While the summer transfer window was dominated by the news of David de Gea’s proposed move to Real Madrid, there was another high-profile switch that could have taken place between the two giants of world football. Centre-back Sergio Ramos was heavily linked with the Red Devils, but eventually signed a lucrative new contract which will keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu till 2020.
The 30-year-old defender recently revealed that Manchester United did make an offer which he considered, but admitted that he had always preferred to stay at Real Madrid.
“There was an offer from United,” Ramos said, according to Goal. “I considered changing for a while but Real Madrid was always my priority and there were no economic reasons.
“Did I feel cheated [by Madrid]? No, but I did feel disappointed for a while. There were some troubles that came to an end. I have not heard about [interest from Chelsea]. Many things have always been said.
“Flattery from big clubs is always good as this is because you are doing well, but if the fans and my club want me.”

Starting out as a right-back, he has gradually drifted towards a more central role and has become the backbone of the Real defence. At 30 years old, Ramos is in the prime of his career and is expected to play a huge role in the development of the team in the next few years.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are still on the hunt for a world class centre-back to help them return to the summit of English football.
