Manchester United complete the signing of Irish wonderkid Lee O’Connor

Manchester United are on a spending spree at all levels of the club, and just a few weeks after confirming the signing of Dutch wonderkid Tahith Chong, the club have now signed yet another young talent for their academy.

The Red Devils have made some big signings since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in an attempt to add world class talent to the first team. While Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao have come and gone, Memphis Depay and Bastian Schweinsteiger will finish their first season at Old Trafford this year. But Manchester United are not ignoring their youth academy either.

Earlier in April, the club confirmed the signing of Dutch wonderkid Tahith Chong, and they have now signed yet another promising youngster in Ireland U16 captain Lee O’Connor. The attack minded full-back was signed from Irish club Villa FC Waterford and will join the club’s youth ranks.

“It’s the same as any other club. We all want to attract the best young players in Europe, at whatever age, and we’re exactly the same,” said the head of the Manchester United youth academy Nicky Butt, according to the Mirror.

“We want to attract the best players we can from all over Europe and bring them into what we feel is already a great set-up.”

Future Red Devils in the making

Manchester United have always been a club that have encouraged promotion of youth talent from the acaemy. The most historic United teams have been assembled from young players coming up through the ranks, including Matt Busby’s ‘Busby Babes’, who brought glory to Old Trafford in the 1940’s and 50’s and the class of ’92, who were pivotal to much of Sir Alex Ferguson’s success.

Nicky Butt, one of the stars from the class of ’92, is now the head of the youth academy and knows all about how to spot and nurture skills in a young player. Although the results of the first team have been far from impressive this season, some great young prospects have announced themselves to the world in the 2015-16 campaign. With highly rated talent like Chong and O’Connor now honing their abilities in the youth team, the future looks bright for Manchester United — however dim the present may be.
