Zidane optimistic about Real Madrid turning Wolfsburg deficit around

Real Madrid have the steep task of overturning a 2-0 deficit against Wolfsburg in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal, but Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane believes his side can do great things at the Bernabeu.

The Madridistas warmed up for the midweek clash with an emphatic 4-0 win over SD Eibar on Saturday evening, with James Rodriguez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lucas Vasquez, and Jesse Rodriguez getting on to the score-sheet.

However, in spite of this huge win, the main focus seemed to be on Real’s midweek game against Wolfsburg, a tie that Zidane thinks his men can overturn.

“I’m more optimistic today, winning like this with the first half performance… perhaps a bit less so the second, but I go away pleased with the game, so I’m more optimistic,” Zidane was quoted saying on Real Madrid’s official website. “We know what we have to do on Tuesday and what we’re playing for. We’re going to prepare well, rest up and play at our best on Tuesday.

“We know that we have a lot to do. We are two goals down and it will be complicated. We know we are capable of doing it, of achieving big things. When things get tough, we can do great things at the Bernabeu,” continued Zidane.

Is the double on for Real Madrid again?

While they were disqualified from the Copa del Rey for fielding a suspended player, Real Madrid had also fallen seven points behind league leaders Barcelona. Now, however, with Real’s win and Barcelona’s 1-0 loss at the hands of Real Sociedad, Los Blancos are just four points behind the Blaugrana.

One problem for Zizou’s men is that local rivals Atletico Madrid are one point ahead of them, and will go top if Barcelona slip up any further. However, Atletico have some difficult fixtures coming up, having to face Athletic Bilbao, Malaga, and Celta Vigo. The chase for the La Liga title has been thrown wide open after this weekend’s results, and Real Madrid still have a decent chance of winning it.

The Champions League is a different proposition altogether though, with Real Madrid needing to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first half. What makes their task even more difficult is they did not score any away goals in the first leg. However, as Zidane says, anything could happen when the Madridistas playing in front of their own crowd, and the double is very much on for his side.
