Manchester United Team Update: Schweinsteiger out for the season; Herrera, Young return

The Red Devils have lost their German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger for the rest of the season to a knee injury. However, things are looking up on the injuries front with a number of players set to return.

The injury crisis that derailed Manchester United’s season seems to have passed, with a number of their key players returning from injury. While Antonio Valencia has played a role in the past couple of games, Ashley Young and Ander Herrera are also on the road to recovery after they both sustained groin injuries.

However, they have lost a big player in Bastian Schweinsteiger, who picked up a knee injury while with the German national team. It looks likely that the 32-year-old will be ruled out for the rest of the season.

“Schweinsteiger was injured already before the matches,” said Van Gaal, according to the official club website.

“I think it was on the second day of training. That’s a big blow for us and also for the national team.

“You can never say anything about that [missing the rest of the season] because he’s started his rehabilitation. You have to wait and see.”

Louis van Gaal is likely to stick to his winning combination against Everton on Sunday — Marcus Rashford starting up front with Juan Mata behind him, and Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard on the wings. Morgan Schneiderlin will line up with Michael Carrick in central midfield. David de Gea will man the goal behind a back four consisting of Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind, Chris Smalling and Matteo Darmian.

Everton meanwhile, lost their veteran midfielder Gareth Barry to suspension, but can call upon Belgian midfielder Kevin Mirallas who has served out his suspension. John Stones was also a doubt before the match, after picking up a knock with the England national team, but is expected to start the match against Manchester United.
