Arsenal FC Transfer News: Gunners scouting Dortmund attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Arsenal are reportedly keeping close tabs on Borussia Dortmund attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan this season, with a view to potentially make a bid for the Armenian in the summer.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been in fine form for Borussia Dortmund this season, scoring 15 goals and providing 14 assists in all competitions for the German giants. The midfielder’s performances have piqued the interest of several top clubs, including Arsenal.

According to the Guardian, the Gunners have sent scouts to watch the player in Germany and are also analysing him through match videos, with the intention of offering a bid for the attacking midfielder in the summer.

Mkhitaryan moved from Shakhtar Donetsk to Borussia Dortmund in 2013 for 27.5 million euros. After a couple of indifferent seasons, he has shown his potential this season. At 27 years old, he is in the prime of his career and could prove to be an astute signing for any top level club. Mkhitaryan’s contract at Dortmund only extends till 2017, which could give him the bargaining power in brokering a potential transfer away from the Westfalenstadion.

Do Arsenal need an attacking midfielder?

Arsene Wenger has often been criticised for being frugal when it comes to spending money in the transfer market. However, whenever Wenger has made a big money signing, it has been a clever one to strengthen a particular position in the squad.

Mkhitaryan is an attacking midfielder who can be used on the wings and Arsenal currently have a wealth of choices in that department. Alexis Sanchez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joel Campbell are permanent contenders for those positions, while Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck are also capable of playing in those roles. Arsenal may be better served by signing a world class central striker to alleviate the pressure on Olivier Giroud.
