Liverpool FC are moving closer towards signing Bayern Munich midfielder Mario Gotze, and the Reds’ boss believes that they could get the 24-year-old for as low a price as £20 million.

Gotze has failed to establish himself as a first team regular during his three-year stay at the Bavarian club, and is believed to be wanting a move away from Bayern Munich.

The 2014 World Cup winner has missed out on a lot of football action this season with injuries, and is also said to have fallen out of favour with manager Pep Guardiola. In fact, the 24-year-old has just started in one match since October.

While Guardiola is set to leave Bayern Munich after the end of the 2015/16 season, Gotze is not too eager to remain in the Bayern Munich squad when new manager Carlo Ancelotti takes over at the Allianz Arena.

The German playmaker had come into the fore under the tutelage of Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, and believes that his former boss can get his career back on track, according to the Daily Express.

Klopp, who was appointed as the manager at Liverpool earlier this season, is on a mission to take the club back to it’s former glory days, but has so far failed to churn out the performances on a consistent basis.

According to reports in the English media, Klopp will be looking for a complete squad overhaul in the summer, and Gotze is one of the main players that he wants to sign. There is also the issue of Klopp being familiar with the player as Gotze had excelled under his gegenpressing system at Dortmund. Liverpool fans will be hoping that his arrival may resurrect both Gotze’s career and Liverpool’s lost glory in the Premier League.

A cheap acquisition

Despite having a forgettable season in which he has scored four goals and made three assists in just 12 appearances, Gotze is still regarded as one of the best young playmakers in the world. In fact, he is valued at a little over £30 million by Transfermarkt.

Is a reunion on the cards?

However, the German will have just one year left on his contract at the end of the current season, and is reportedly not keen on extending his deal with the Bavarian giants. This could force Bayern Munich’s hand as reports suggest that they may agree to sell him for as little as £15 million to £20 million. However, Gotze is set to get quite a substantial pay rise if he moves to Liverpool.
