Rooney’s England starting berth is under threat from Kane and Vardy

Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy have been in sparkling form for their clubs this season. Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur occupy the top two spots in the Premier League, thanks in large part to their goalscoring exploits.

England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has been out with a knee injury since mid-February, but the national team showed no signs of missing the veteran in their recent friendly against Germany. Manager Roy Hodgson has two in-form strikers to choose from in Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane, and the England manager recently stated that Rooney’s position in the starting eleven was by no means assured.

“When he [Rooney] comes back and is fit again, he is going to be putting enormous pressure on these players. Just as these players have been putting enormous pressure on him,” said Hodgson, according to FourFourTwo.

“Vardy came on and did well, Kane was excellent throughout the game. I will enjoy that for the minute. I’m pretty sure when Wayne is fit again, and comes back, then we will assess the situation.”

However, the former Liverpool coach did go on to say that Rooney had led England admirably through the qualifying campaign for the Euros and did not deserve to have his future with the national team questioned.

Kane, Vardy form undeniable

For the first time in years, two Englishmen are topping the Premier League goalscoring charts. Sunderland’s Kevin Phillips was the last Englishman to win the Golden Boot — a feat he achieved in 1999-00. This season, Kane leads the charts with 21 goals, while Jamie Vardy is just two goals behind.

Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney’s tally of seven goals this season is underwhelming, with the Manchester United striker being struck down with an injury just as things were starting to look better. After a miserable start to the season, Rooney seemed to return to his prolific best in January and February, scoring five goals in that period, including a winner against arch rivals Liverpool at Anfield.
