Ramos urges Real Madrid fans to think before booing historic Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo scored one and assisted the other to help Real Madrid claim a 2-0 victory over Champions League Round of 16 opponents AS Roma at the Santiago Bernabeu. Despite his contributions, the Portuguese was booed by some sections of the home fans.

Real Madrid fans are notoriously demanding, and are often accused of not supporting the team enough when the chips are down. On Tuesday, Cristiano Ronaldo was booed during Los Blancos’ Champions League win over Roma, even though he had a hand in both the goals at the Bernabeu.

After the match, Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos expressed his disappointment with the fans because of their treatment of Ronaldo.

“I would tell the fans to think a little first,” Ramos said, according to the Guardian.

“I respect them but when things don’t go well they should support their players because we all want the best for Real Madrid.”

Ramos added that Cristiano Ronaldo was a ‘historic’ player for Los Blancos. “He’s a historic player for Real Madrid, he keeps proving that year after year, look at what he’s achieved.”

Record breaking Ronaldo

After his latest strike against Roma, Cristiano Ronaldo took his incredible goal tally to 13 in the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League. The Portuguese has been the highest goalscorer in the Champions League for the past three seasons, and looks to be marching towards his fourth successive season as the top scorer of Europe’s elite club competition. Another top scorer’s award would also bring him on par with rival Lionel Messi, who has five to Ronaldo’s four.

At the end of last year’s competition, Cristiano Ronaldo was neck to neck with Lionel Messi atop the list of all-time highest scorers in the Champions League. The Argentine and the Portuguese both had a tally of 77 goals. Ronaldo has surged forward in this season’s competition though, with 13 goals compared to Messi’s five.
