Arsenal have had a woeful week in the Premier League, losing back to back games against Manchester United and Swansea City. After these setbacks to their title challenge, one of their best players, Alexis Sanchez, questioned whether the Gunners have the hunger to become champions.
Arsenal failed to steady the ship after losing to Manchester United at the weekend, falling to a 2-1 loss against relegation-battling Swansea City. This has seriously dented the Gunners’ title ambitions, and they will have to be close to perfect from here on in if they are to win the Premier League.
One of their biggest stars, Chilean midfielder Alexis Sanchez, has stated that the Gunners need to find the hunger within themselves to be champions — something he believes is severely lacking at Arsenal right now.
“If we go out on to the pitch with hunger to become champions, to win the Premier League or the Champions League, we can achieve it,” said Sanchez, according to the Guardian.
“There are great players here, I train with them daily and they have got the mentality and the desire to win but sometimes, we lack the hunger, the mentality that we are winning 1-0 when we go out on to the pitch. Sometimes, we lack this hunger to believe that we can be champions … to go out on to the pitch feeling that we are already winning 1-0.”
Could Spurs hammer in the final nail in the coffin
Not only did the loss to Swansea push Arsenal six points adrift of league leaders Leicester City and three behind arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur, they are now within touching distance of many of the clubs below them on the table. Only four points separate them from Manchester City and Manchester United, and City also have a game in hand.
The next match could be the most important one of Arsenal’s season, and it comes against their fiercest rivals in the Premier League. Tottenham are currently playing some beautiful football, but were stunned by West Ham United in their previous game in midweek. Spurs will be looking to bounce back, and the possibility of completely derailing their North London rivals will no doubt be a motivating factor for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.
