Manchester United were looking at the experienced full-back Yuto Nagatomo to bolster their ranks in a position that has given them many headaches of late. However, his agent claims he is intent on staying in the Serie A.
Yuto Nagatomo had been linked with a move to the Premier League, with both Liverpool and Manchester United reportedly hunting for the Japanese full-back’s signature. The injury situation at Old Trafford added further fuel to the rumours that Nagatomo would soon be on his way to England, but his agent clarified that he is intent on extending his contract with Inter Milan.
The player’s agent Federico Pastorello has recently confirmed that Nagatomo is looking to stay in Italy.
“We have not yet set meetings. At the moment nothing new, but I believe that soon a new contract can be confirmed. As for offers from English clubs, Yuto wants to stay in Italy, more precisely at Inter, ” Pastorello said, according to fcinter1908.it.
Van Gaal still looking for a cure
Nagatomo would have been an experienced and reliable option for a position that has been proving to be a major headache for the Red Devils this season. Manchester United’s two first choice full-backs Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw have both had injury hit seasons. While Shaw hasn’t featured for the club since suffering a horrible injury to his leg against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League back in September, Darmian is currently ruled out with a dislocated shoulder.
Other players Van Gaal could have deployed as full-backs have suffered similar fates. Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are all sidelined with injury. The Red Devils have had to throw inexperienced youngsters like Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Donald Love into the deep end and hope they can deliver. Hence, signing an experienced full-back should be one of the biggest priorities for Manchester United this summer, but it looks like Nagatomo has ruled himself out as an option.
