Arsene Wenger Delighted With Welbeck’s Winner And Arsenal FC’s Comeback

After the emphatic second half aggression from the Gunners culminating in a win at the Emirates against league leaders Leicester City FC, Arsene Wenger is full of praises for his team and particularly Danny Welbeck.

Welbeck suffered an injury last season in April 2015 and came back to action from the bench in the 82nd minute, after 10 months away from first-team football.

He turned out to be an impactful substitution as he scored in the final minute of the fixture to give Arsenal the much needed 3-points to move higher up in the league table. As of now, the Gunners trail the league leaders by only 2 points and are strong contenders in the title race.

In the post-match press conference, talking about Danny Welbeck’s perfect comeback from injury, Wenger said, “I planned at the start to play him next week. But in the last two training sessions, he was very strong and I decided just, in the end, to include him in the squad.”

Wenger feels it was a great decision to include Danny Welbeck in the squad

Welbeck showed promise in the training sessions before the fixture, and the Arsenal boss feels selecting him was the right decision to make as it turns out his goal was the decisive one.

Talking about selecting Danny, Wenger said, “It was a great decision because Danny Welbeck is a great player, and you never know in our job if somebody else had come on would he have scored or not. But everybody is extremely happy for him because he has been out for 10 months, that is an eternity for a player.”

Coming on as a substitute in the last few minutes of the match, there was a lot of pressure on Welbeck, even more so as Walcott had equalised in the 70th minute. And the 25-year-old striker delivered with a subliminal header from Mesut Ozil’s free kick.

“We work very hard, our medical team, our fitness team, to bring him back so strong. Let’s not forget he has not played one minute for us, he has just played 45 minutes in the under-21s. You know Danny Welbeck, he is a great guy, with a great mentality. He worked extremely hard. That is why he is fit,” Wenger added.

Welbeck was sold to Arsenal FC in a £14 million deal in the summer transfer window of season 2014-15 , and scored 8 goals in 34 appearances for the Gunners in his first season. Close to the end of the season, the England international suffered a knee injury which caused him to remain sidelined for the rest of the season as well as a majority of the next one.

After their victory over the Foxes, Arsenal FC are well on their way to secure a 14th title, or at least offer a tough competition in the title run.
