Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal seemed to be quite a happy man after his side trounced Liverpool FC 1-0 at Anfield. The Dutchman has even not ruled out a return to the title race for the Red Devils.
Liverpool FC, who have managed to beat most of the other major sides in the Premier League so far, came up short against Louis van Gaal’s struggling Manchester United, in spite of having most of the chances in the game. This seems to have ignited some of the old spark among fans and the team alike.
Following the match, Van Gaal said that he has not ruled out the chances of Manchester United running for the title this season. “We have a lot of matches to go. We started 2016 very good, with a lot of wins and draws – we didn’t lose,” Van Gaal was quoted as saying by Sky Sports. “This game will give a huge boost to the players, the fans and to everyone connected with Manchester United – and we have to continue, of course.
“To beat Liverpool is always important Today it was important because our competitors lost points and when the gap [at the top] is like this we can overturn that. That is what I’m thinking.”
Champions League bigger priority for Manchester United
The Red Devils’ fans may be dreaming big after that win, but a more pressing priority for them right now is to get back into the top four Champions League qualification spots. Failure to qualify for the Champions League would mean that the club will have to bear a big financial hit, and would also find it difficult to attract the best players in the transfer market.
