Manchester United-Liverpool fixtures used to be top of the table clashes between title contenders in the bygone era. Since 1990 however, Liverpool FC have not been able to win the league and the Red Devils manager Louis Van Gaal, ahead of their Premier League match at Anfield, said that he couldn’t imagine that happening to his team.
The last time Manchester United had to wait 26 years for a title was between 1967-1993, but their rivals Liverpool FC, who last won the League in 1990, find themselves equaling that unwanted record as they head into the important clash against the Red Devils at Anfield.
Van Gaal can’t imagine it happening at United
The Red Devil’s manager said that United were too good to fall into a similar rut when he was asked to comment about the run.
“I am part of the transition so I cannot imagine that shall happen with Manchester United. But as you say when it is happening to Liverpool it can happen also to Manchester United. But I cannot imagine that, as we are in position and we are going in the right way. Maybe it shall take a longer time but I cannot imagine that it shall be the same for Manchester United: it’s too big, too well organised and we have infrastructure and we are improving that every year,” Van Gaal said, according to The Guardian.
Must-win Clash
With United currently 6th on the league table and Liverpool still struggling in 9th spot, this is an important match for both teams at a stage in the season when neither can afford to lose. Liverpool can pull level with the Red Devils if they can pull off a victory, while Manchester United need a win to fuel their challenge for a top four finish.
While United-Liverpool derbies are always intense, with the history between Louis van Gaal and Jurgen Klopp in the Bundesliga and the current state of affairs at both clubs, their meeting at Anfield has all the ingredients of a being an absolute classic.
