Interim manager Guus Hiddink’s options up front have been reduced with the injury to Radamel Falcao, which might prompt the Blues to spend money on a forward in the January transfer window
Saido Berahino’s season has been hampered because of his failure to get the summer move he wanted to Tottenham Hotpsur, but recent reports suggest an even bigger move might be in the offing for the 22-year-old.
Chelsea FC have only one fully fit striker in Diego Costa for their game against West Brom, and even the Spain international is recovering from a contusion in his knee following the FA Cup third round win over Scunthorpe United.
Interim manager Guus Hiddink recently expressed his concern about a potential serious injury to Diego Costa and the impact that could have on the Blues, with games set to come thick and fast over the coming weeks. Unsurprisingly, Chelsea FC have been linked with a host of strikers in the January window, and West Brom want-away Saido Berahino is the latest to be connected with a move to south-west London.
According to the Express, “Hiddink is assessing the market”, and along with AC Milan’s Carlos Bacca, Berahino is high on his list of striker targets for this month. The Blues will have to see off competition from Tottenham Hotspur for his signature, however, with the North Londoners looking to sign competition for star man Harry Kane.
Berahino a realistic option for the Blues
Although Chelsea FC youngster Patrick Bamford has performed brilliantly in the lower leagues, his loan at Crystal Palace was a disaster, with the Englishman failing to establish himself in Alan Pardew’s first team. Hiddink doesn’t seem too keen to include him as part of the first-team squad either, and as such, the 22-year-old is likely to be loaned for the remainder of the season.
Meanwhile, the likes of Radamel Falcao and Loïc Rémy do not seem to have a future at Chelsea FC beyond the summer transfer window. As such, a player like Berahino would be a very good signing for the Blues at the right price. A quick, strong forward with superb finishing ability sounds like just the type of player who could provide some real competition to Diego Costa in the coming seasons, if he were to make the move.
