Manchester United came into the match as slight favourites for the EFL Cup but had to be wary of a solid Southampton side that had done well to reach the final.

The Red Devils got off to the best of starts as an early Southampton goal was ruled out for offside, a debatable decision, and United subsequently ran to a 2-0 lead before Manolo Gabbiadini cut the deficit into half.

Another goal by Gabbiadini meant the score was tied at 2-2 before Zlatan Ibrahimovic rose to the occasion, literally, with a powerful header to power United towards the EFL Cup, the first trophy of the Jose Mourinho era for the Red Devils.
