Barcelona scored a stunning goal on the break to take the lead against Arsenal after a difficult first half, and fans on social media were once again in awe of Luis Suarez, Neymar and Lionel Messi, who combined to put the Catalans in front.
What seemed to be a solid performance from Arsenal for the first hour of the match ended in disaster, with Barcelona striking twice in the second half to take home a result that should see them through to yet another Champions League quarter-final.
Barcelona kept the majority of the possession in the first half, but were unable to convert it into shots on goal. In the second half, Messi successfully broke the stalemate in the 71st minute, after brilliant work from Suarez and Neymar down the left. The Argentine superstar then converted a late penalty to put the Catalans in a commanding position going into the return leg.
In another incident just before half-time, Barcelona centre-back Javier Mascherano put in a crunching tackle on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, leaving both players writhing on the floor in apparent agony. Unsurprisingly, the ‘Ox’ subsequently became the butt of several Internet jokes for the manner of his fall.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Arsenal’s defeat at home and a possible Champions League exit:
I missed the first seven minutes of #AFCvFCB. The score says 0-0, but that can’t be right. Surely Barca has scored 6 by now.

You touch Barcelona players you get booked. New FIFA rule. #AFCvFCB

Can’t quibble with our effort.
Though not much chance of my streak around the Emirates happening the way Giroud’s playing. #AFCvFCB— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) February 23, 2016
“The Ox” was more the little lamb there in getting steamrolled by Mascherano.

Mascherano has been unreal today. What a player.
