[Video] Messi and Suárez combine for extraordinary penalty, but Neymar claims Argentine’s pass was meant for him

FC Barcelona were at their scintillating best in their 6-1 rout of Celta de Vigo at the Camp Nou on Sunday and one goal in particular became the talking point of the game for its sheer audacity.

The home side had a comfortable 3-1 lead in the 81st minute when Lionel Messi stepped up to the penalty spot and prepared to score his 300th La Liga goal for Barcelona. Instead, in a move that took everybody by surprise, the Argentine superstar made the perfect lay-off for an onrushing Luis Suárez to side-foot home his hat-trick goal on the night.

Brazilian superstar Neymar claimed after the game that the pass was actually meant for him, and was a training-ground routine he had been practising with Messi. He is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: “We practised the penalty – it was for me, but Luis was closer and scored. It doesn’t matter, he scored so it worked well.

“We love each other a lot and that friendship is the most important thing, no matter who scores the goals.”

Here is a video of the penalty that is set to go down as an iconic moment:
