Wenger Surprised Why Sanchez Did Not Sign For Liverpool FC

Speaking ahead of Arsenal FC’s clash against Liverpool FC, Arsene Wenger said that he was surprised he was able to sign Sanchez who looked destined to be heading to Anfield.

Arsenal have had an indifferent start to the new Premier League season. A major reason for that is the rustiness of their forward Alexis Sanchez, who has returned late to the squad after winning the Copa America with Chile.

Sanchez was responsible for forcing Crystal Palace defender Delaney to put the ball in his own net that ensured Arsenal FC win their first game of the new season.

Wenger surprised at Sanchez signing

.

Arsenal signed Sanchez in the summer of 2014, when Liverpool FC sold Luis Suarez to FC Barcelona. Arsene Wenger feels that Liverpool FC were in pole position to sign the forward, but he was surprised when they finally pulled off the coup for the Chile man.

Wenger was quoted saying by Sky Sports: “At the start when I saw (Luis) Suarez went to Barcelona I though that is the obvious deal, one player one way and the other player goes the other way, so I had not much hope and I was quite surprised that at the time it was possible.”

Sanchez improved at Arsenal FC

Praising the Chile forward for his improvement since signing for the Gunners, Wenger added:

“Alexis has that desire to go forward and provoke chaos in the defences because he has a go at you, to run at people and that creates danger.”

“He is already better than when he arrived.

“In his final finishing there is room for improvement, but in his final ball he is already much better, his vision is quite good and incisive.”

Wenger added: “What Sanchez has is in the first two yards is that he is lightning quick. He has that explosive attitude linked with his spirit, which makes him even more spectacular.”

‘Spending money not the only reason for success, Arsenal won’t add new player’

Arsenal fans have urged the club to sign a new forward in order to win the league. Brushing aside those suggestions, Wenger explained: “It is not just the consequence of the money they spend in how successful you are.

“That is why you have to keep your nerve and not buy just because the others buy – but buy because you have found a player that can really give you a plus.

“I believe this squad is ready to fight for the title and has a chance to do it given that we are continuing to develop as a team, that is the first thing.

“We are not against taking a gamble, but what you want is to take a gamble in a market where the opportunity is there.”
