David de Gea was all set to get his wish to become a Real Madrid player, until due to issues related to paper-work submission, the deal fell through. Having hoped to get his dream transfer all summer, we look at what options De Gea has at Manchester United as he gets ready to spend at least another six months at the English club.
Both Real Madrid and Manchester United blamed each other for the paper-work debacle that resulted in the falling through of the David de Gea deal.
He now has to spend at least the next six months at Old Trafford, and has the following options at the club:
1 – Remain distracted by Real Madrid move and not play.
De Gea has only a year remaining on his contract and can negotiate with other clubs from 1st January 2016. He can choose to run his contract down in two ways. The worse of the two way is to continue to be mentally unfit to play for Manchester United.
Van Gaal had rightly said that the position of the goalkeeper is such that it requires high amount of concentration. With de Gea unable to convince the Dutchman about him not being distracted by his proposed move to Real, the manager chose to drop the Spaniard from the squad.
De Gea can choose to continue it that way, but with Euro 2016 on the horizon and Del Bosque stating that the player needs to play, the Spanish keeper must get himself focused again.

2 – Regain focus, but not sign a new deal.
The better of the two options in case he chooses to run his contract down – De Gea can chose to regain the mental state that will convince Louis van Gaal to pick him in the starting XI again. If the club refuses to sell de Gea in December, with only 6 months remaining on his contract, it will be extremely vital that the stopper does not get distracted by the situation.
3 – Sign a new deal
Manchester United do not have shortage of funds, neither will they mind paying de Gea over the top, something he really deserves with his status as the fan favorite, as well as the club’s player of the season over the last two seasons.
De Gea can put the whole saga of the summer behind him, sign a new deal, and focus again on doing what he does best at Manchester – thwarting opposition forwards.
This move can still not be ruled out, with Marca reporting on Wednesday that renewal of his contract at Old Trafford is still a possibility.
While Marca say that De Geaa s a dream was brokena and that a he did everything in his power to sign for Real Madrid”, the Madrid-based paper also claims that United have offered De Gea a new contract in the region of 2.3million euros per season, which is more than what Real Madrid had offered him. However, money has never been the main reason for de Gea’s choice of moving to Madrid (the player was keen to go back to his hometown).
It remains to be seen what de Gea does, but, it is important that he does not create a situation where he is dropped by Manchester United. Such a move does not benefit anyone, and definitely not the player.
