FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has hailed Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, after he became all-time top-scorer for England.
Wayne Rooney became the all-time top goal scorer for England when he scored his 50th against Switzerland in England’s 2-0 EURO 2016 Qualifying win.
The forward overtook Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton to become the highest goal-scorer for the 1966 World Champions.
Rooney a special player: Messi
Speaking to . The Mirror, Messi hailed the England captain as ‘a once in a generation, special player’.
“Wayne Rooney is for me a once in a generation player. One of those special players, who is not comparable to any other,” he is quoted as saying by The Mirror.
“There are many special players, but Rooney has exceptional quality and technical ability as well as being one of the strongest players I have faced with an exceptional work rate – there is nobody like him.
“Rooney is a winner. He will just be focused on success with England in the European Championship.
“I have always said the same is true of myself and Argentina a breaking caps and goals records mean nothing unless they come with trophies.
“Like I say, Wayne is a winner. It will always be the team first and personal records second.”
Rooney has not been in the best of the form for Manchester United this season. But, he is among the top 20 players in the Premier League with most distance covered this season.
Typically, still being useful to his team even in one of his worst phases as far as goals are concerned.
