Marco Reus Signs New Borussia Dortmund Contract

Marco Reus has signed a new deal with Borussia Dortmund until 2019.

Reus has been linked with various clubs in the English Premier League as well as the La Liga including the likes of European Champions Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United because his previous contract, which had two years remaining, had a A?20 million release clause who were hoping to sign the forward in the summer.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich too were hoping to land him with their chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge expressed their desire publicly.

But it looks like the 25-year-old will end up staying at the Westfalenstadion for the near future as his new deal doesn’t have a release clause.

Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke was confident that Reus has a long term future with them as he said, “We never let ourselves be guided by all the rumours and change always seen a good chance that this exceptional player deliberately opts for a future with Dortmund.”

“Marco can shape an era in Dortmund, as has been done before him by Uwe Seeler in Hamburg or Steven Gerrard in Liverpool. That Marco has decided to remain, in the midst of a sporting crisis for BVB, shows a high degree of identification, of which we are very proud. “

Reus, who has scored 49 goals for his boyhood club making 107 appearances in total, appeared delighted to extend his stay. a I am very happy with my decision to stay at BVB,a he said. a Dortmund is my home town and Borussia simply my club. I am looking forward to a successful future with our team and our fantastic fans supporting us. There is a lot to do and I want to be part of that.a

Reus joined Dortmund for a second stint from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012 having been released at a young age for being too small.

He scored in his side’s 3-0 win at Freiburg to lift them off the bottom of the table. Dortmund are still in the Champions League however, with the first leg of the knockout stages just a fortnight away.
