Manchester United are targeting Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke to address their goalscoring problems.
Manchester United have enquired about Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke, according to talkSPORT.
The Belgian has thus far been linked with a move to Liverpool FC, but it was revealed in several reports in the English media that the Reds had “cooled their interest” in the player after Aston Villa refused to budge from the fact that the buyer club would have to pay the release clause, which is A?32.5million, to acquire the services of the player.
The report states that while the player is not United’s number one target, and the Red Devils will also not meet the club’s valuation of the player, they would consider a deal for the player if they were to reduce the asking price. They also add van Gaal won’t be opposed to using one of his fringe players in a cash plus player deal, for the former Genk striker.
Manchester United are looking to add a striker to add within their ranks this summer. Radamel Falcao was let go of and Robin van Persie looks on his way out. The club does need a quality striker this summer if they were to compete with Chelsea and Manchester City for the title and do well in the other cup competitions, including the Champions League.
Benteke played very well after Tim Sherwood took over and was prolific for the Villains towards the end of the campaign. He could be a good addition for the Red Devils but exactly why Liverpool gave up their pursuit of him, the reason against signing him would be his hefty asking price. Is he really worth that kind of money? If van Gaal can get the Villains to lower their asking price or land him in a cash plus player(s) deal, the move would make more sense.
