Manchester United defender Phil Jones has hailed new signings at the club and believes the English giants now have a squad to win the league.
Manchester United have made four signings this summer, already, strengthening their defense with Matteo Darmian from Torino, adding steel and creativity in midfield by bringing in Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton and Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich. The club have also bolstered their attack by snapping up Dutch winger Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven.
“Squad is good enough to win the league”
Phil Jones reckons the addition of the four players is good enough for Manchester United to win the league in 2015-16 season.
“That’s the aim [to win the league],” Jones said after United’s preseason victory over Club America on Saturday morning.
“That’s what we want to be able to do. We have the squad now to be able to do that and there is no reason why we can’t.”
More signings on the way
Despite Jones being confident that the current squad can win the league, when asked if he was expecting further arrivals, Van Gaal told MUTV: a I hope so. No, we are not finished yet, I think.a
a It is what I have said already in many press conferences. We need a balance in the selection and I think we still need to improve at least two positions and we shall do that when it is possible.a
a But we shall only buy when the player can give a contribution to our level. And, of course, that is in the eyes of our staff, but I have to have confidence that he can cope with the rhythm of the Premier League.a
Manchester United Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has given his backing and wants to leave nothing to chance and has confirmed he has prepared a list of players he could bid for if manager Louis van Gaal feels further new faces are required to achieve title glory.
“Essentially there is [a physical list of names] because we track everything. That’s what the scouting team does,” said Woodward, who flew home on Saturday but will return to the United States for the third game of the tour against Barcelona in San Jose on July 25.
“It’s relentless because you’re immediately focused on the next [signing].”
The two position the club are expected to fill are a defender and goalkeeper.
The cluba s chase of a central defender is well documented with credible reports in the media linking them with moves for Nicolas Otamendi of Valencia, Sergio Ramos of Real Madrid, and Mats Hummels was also on Manchester Uniteda s radar before he decided to commit his future to Borussia Dortmund.
Also, with Valdes set to depart the club, a goalkeeper could arrive with . Sergio Romero and Jasper Cillessen linked heavily with a move to Manchester United.
