Louis van Gaal Describes Memphis Depay As “A Goal-Scoring Winger”

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has tagged his new signing Memphis Depay as a goal scoring winger, which is a unique characteristic of a footballer. He said that Depay belongs to the same category as Lionel Messi who also is a great goal scorer irrespective of being predominantly a winger.

In an interview Van Gaal said: “He’s a goal-scoring winger and there aren’t so many of them in the world. Messi is one of those.”

The Dutch manager also revealed why he was in a hurry to rope in Memphis Depay. “I was forced to handle [the situation] as a manager because, otherwise, he was going to PSG,” he said. “That’s why I had to sign him and we’ve done it within one day. But, for us, it’s better to focus on the game against [Crystal] Palace [on Saturday].”

Memphis Depay was linked with several other top European clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and their arch rivals Liverpool.

Louis van Gaal made six big signings last summer spending a lot of money in the transfer window. He has similar plans in the coming summer also and he wants to do it as soon as possible.

The Manchester United manager further added: “I want to do this [make signings] early but it’s not always possible.

“When there’s a chance, you have to handle that and manage it directly and that was the case. I want to purchase players after our season and not during the season because it disturbs our concentration for the match.”
