Liverpool Plan Shock Move For Gary Medel As Lucas Future Remains Doubtful

Liverpool . are targeting Chile and Inter Milan midfielder Gary Medel, to bring in this summer.

Liverpool have had a busy summer so far and it looks like the Merseysiders’ management is not planning on resting anytime soon.

Latest to be linked with a move to Liverpool is Inter Milan’s Gary Medel.

According to Metro who cite Chilean media outlet La Tercera, Liverpool were impressed with Medela s performances during the Copa America, and he is on the club’s transfer radar.

Medel was brought to Europe by Sevilla, where he spent three seasons and made nearly 100 appearances. Cardiff City spent a club record A?11 million fee for Medel and brought him to the Premier League in the summer of 2013.

Medel impressed in last year’s World Cup and was quickly bought by Inter Milan in the window, for a A?10 million fee, something that looked extremely likely given Cardiff City were relegated in the concluded season.

The 27 year-old was an important player for Mancini last season and featured in 44 games for the side in all competitions, with only two of those, coming from the bench.

Nicknamed the “Chilean Pitbull”, Medel is a good defensive midfielder, who did extremely well for both Chile and Inter last season. The player is extremely good at keeping possession and boasts an impressive 91.8% passing accuracy in last season’s Serie A and a 91.7% passing accuracy in the Copa America. Like a proper defensive midfielder, his tackling rate is great and one of his biggest strengths is said to be that of ball interception. He boasted impressive stats of 2.3 tackles per game in the league last season along with a 2.9 interceptions per game.

The future of Lucas remains doubtful at the moment and it is not surprising to see Liverpool linked with defensive midfielders like Medel and Illarramendi. However, at the moment, these remain rumors as nothing conclusive has been brought to the fore to suggest the Reds are indeed, looking at the Chilean.

Medel will make a great addition to the Liverpool side as the defensive midfielder spot has not been filled ever since Javier Mascherano departed for Barcelona. Brendan Rodgers’s lack of attention to the defensive side of things has got him a lot of criticism as Liverpool have leaked goals over the last two seasons. Getting someone who can shield the defense adequately, like Medel, could be the best business the club does this summer, despite the addition of Roberto Firmino.
