Liverpool Handed Major Boost As Jordan Henderson Agrees Contract Extension With Club

Henderson may turn out to be the key man for Rodgers.

Liverpool FC finally have some good news coming their way.

Liverpool have agreed a A?100,000-a-week deal with Jordan Henderson that will keep the former Sunderland player at Merseyside for the foreseeable future. The 24-year-old is expected to sign terms by the end of this week, which will see him tie terms with the Anfield outfit till 2020.

Talks had been complicated due to Henderson becoming the captain after Steven Gerrard left for LA Galaxy in the summer (though Brendan Rodgers is yet to confirm that). Amidst all the recent gloom for last season’s league runners up – finishing without Champions League next season (probably), exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Aston Villa- this will come as a welcomed announcement.

There is considerable pressure on Brendan Rodgers now, especially since Jurgen Klopp became available for the summer. The focus for the Northern Irishman will be to help the Reds win all their remaining six Premier League matches (that includes an away trip to Chelsea). If they are also gifted by Manchester United and Manchester City dropping points along the way, the Reds will have an outside chance for the top 4. In any case, Rodgers himself has reiterated to finish the season strong and finish with as many points on the board.

While it was expected Henderson would extend his contract (despite not starting out at the club, he is viewed as someone who has spent his entire football career with Liverpool), the news of a stand-off was naturally not pleasing for the club supporters and would have put the hierarchy at significant uncomfort. Therefore, this comes as very good news, especially when things look very grey for the Reds.
