Reports and rumours about Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacica s transfer to Liverpool have turned into a soap opera at this point. As someone mentioned in social media, this has virtually become a game of Chinese whispers.

The summer started with rumours of Liverpoola s interest in the Croatian international as they searched for Steven Gerrarda s replacement. The youngster, who is considered to be one of the best young midfield talents in Europe, has been scouted by the likes of Barcelona, Arsenal and Wolfsburg since his arrival in Italy. But it was Liverpool who were thought to be favourites to sign him in this transfer window.

There have been contradicting reports about what followed the initial interest from the English club. While the Italian media was adamant that a deal has been reached between all the three parties, Kovacic came out and dismissed these rumours, stating his intention to prolong his stay at the club. Meanwhile, Inter fans became desperate and even started an online petition to force the club into retaining the midfielder.

Inter official have gone on air to dismiss reports of any deal, while Italian media suggested that Liverpool have offered Mario Balotelli in exchange for Kovacic, but the bid was turned down with Inter insisting on a cash deal. Usually reliable journalist, Gianluca Di Marzio, also reported Liverpoola s interest, but insisted that the Merseyside club are yet submit any concrete offer.

Now Italian publication Tuttosports have claimed that Liverpool are finally willing to meet Intera s demands of A?21.5m and will finally submit an official offer. While, this transfer saga continues, it is perhaps wise to ponder whether Liverpool need to invest this sum of money on a potentially good central midfielder.

The Reds have already signed James Milner this season and they already have the likes of Jordan Henderson, Joe Allen, Emre Can and Lucas Leiva in their squad at the moment. While Kovacic is a wonderful talent, and his arrival will lift the spirits among the fans, he will take time to reach his full potential. The Merseyside club have more pressing concerns in other departments of their squad, and it will perhaps be prudent to steer clear of the Croatian at the moment.
